Bringing the White House Café Neon Sign Home to Deming
Since 1930, the White House Café has been part of Deming’s story. The café first opened on Spruce Street, later moving the business—and its neon sign—to 116 West Pine Street in the heart of downtown. From its earliest days, patrons praised its excellent, well-prepared food, and many locals worked there over the years.
By the 1950s, the café’s gleaming chrome facades, neon sign, and classic diner bar had transformed it into a local landmark. Road-weary travelers cruising through town, locals, and railroad crews from nearby yards alike were drawn in by the promise of hearty fare and a welcoming atmosphere.
Though the café has since closed, its iconic neon sign remains a beloved symbol of Deming’s roadside heritage. The sign’s bold lettering and warm glow continue to evoke memories of the café’s heyday and the golden age of American diners.
The neon sign from the White House Café is being generously donated by a private collector in Minnesota. Originally installed in Deming, NM, this porcelain sign with its vibrant neon lighting captured countless travelers’ attention along our Main Street. We’re coordinating its safe transport back to Deming, followed by expert refurbishment to restore its original glow and structural integrity.
