The History of the Customs House
Built in 1881, the Customs House was once a bustling hub where travelers and traders conducted business, and goods coming through the area were taxed and processed. Positioned near the Southern Pacific Railroad, it was a pivotal location in Deming’s growth as a transportation and trade center, connecting New Mexico to the rest of the nation.
As one of the first buildings of its kind in the area, the Customs House became a central point of commerce, particularly during the era of railroad expansion in the late 19th century. Its architecture reflects the Victorian era, with thick adobe walls, high ceilings, and wide windows designed to let in the cooling desert breezes.
The building remained in active use for many years, serving as a tax and customs office, and later, as a community gathering space before eventually being preserved as a museum. Today, it offers a fascinating glimpse into the life and work of the people who helped shape Deming into the vibrant community it is today.
